CHAPTER 15

Aspen’s lips were still tingling the next morning as she rushed down the stairs to get to work. She’d slept in longer than normal because she’d stayed out later than normal, thanks to Kissy Lips Austin.

And geez, the man could kiss. Aspen had never felt so overwhelmed and intoxicated by a man before. His hands had been gentle but strong, his lips caressing and enticing. The longer they had lingered, the more Aspen had wanted. She wasn’t a complete shut in. She had dated and kissed men before, but none had gotten under her skin so fully that when they were gone, she itched to see them again.

If Austin were a cake, Aspen was positive she would have hoarded the entire thing for herself, refusing to share.

“Late night?”

Aspen froze, her hand on the front door knob. Slowly, she spun and gave Maeve a sheepish grin. “Maybe?”

Maeve pushed her glasses onto her hair. “By the color under your eyes, I’m going to say I was correct.” She tapped the fake lenses. “I don’t even need these to see it.”

“You don’t need those to see anything,” Aspen argued.

Maeve only grinned.

“So...” Aspen tilted her head coolly. “How did things go with Mr. Next Door Neighbor last night?” It was a low blow. Maeve and Ethan hadn’t gotten along in forever, though the disdain seemed mostly one sided. Aspen had no idea why Maeve had a bee in her bonnet about the surfer man, but whenever his name was brought up, Maeve flipped.

Maeve’s expression tightened, but she didn’t let the smile go. “As well as could be expected when someone’s too lazy to fix their own dinner.”

Guilt flooded her system. Aspen had been trying to turn the attention away from herself, but perhaps that hadn’t been the right way to handle it. “Why are you so mad at him?” Aspen asked softly. “We’ve always gotten along in the past. Ethan played with us all our growing up years and was always a sweetheart.”

Speaking of...why couldn’t she have feelings for someone like Ethan? He was cute and friendly. His presence didn’t make her heart skip a beat and give her mixed emotions about slapping him in the face with frosting or kissing him. He was easy. Why couldn’t she like someone who was easy?

“Ethan is a mooch.” Maeve sniffed. “He’s an adult, but he’s never bothered growing up and now, because his parents are gone, we’ve had to take over his care. It’s ridiculous.”

“His parents were killed in an accident,” Aspen said, feeling defensive. Her sister was taking this too far. “Show a little compassion.”

Maeve’s face fell. “Right,” she said softly. “Sorry.” Spinning on her heel, she began to walk away. “I think I’ll work from home today. See ya later.”

Aspen rubbed her forehead. This did not bode well for the rest of the day. Last night had been the stuff of fairy tales and now she had awoken into a nightmare...of her own making. Shaking her head and trying to dispel the discontent, she headed out to her car.
